Amit Shah, a close aide of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has been appointed as the new BJP President with the party's highest decision-making body making the announcement.

Addressing a press conference this afternoon, Rajnath Singh said that he tendered his resignation as party chief to the BJP parliamentary board, which decided that Amit Shah will head the Bharatiya Janata Party. Rajnath lauded Amit Shah's "management skills" and credited him with the BJP's success in Lok Sabha election in Uttar Pradesh.

Celebration arrangements had been organised at the BJP offices in Gujarat. The announcement was made at 12.35 pm this afternoon in the national capital. As soon as the announcement was made by outgoing BJP president and Home Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi, crackers were burst outside the party office here. Several party members broke into jigs and distributed sweets.

The announcement of Shah's name as BJP president came after RSS's nod for the same. Both the Prime Minister and the party president hail from the same state of Gujarat.

Shah has taken over from Rajnath Singh, who is now the Union Home Minister and has announced he will relinquish his BJP role in keeping with the party's "one-man, one-post" formula. Shah was the party strategist instrumental in scripting BJP's massive victory in the north, especially in the politically key state of Uttar Pradesh, where it won 71 of the total 80 seats.

Party leaders feel that after Shah becomes the BJP chief, the link between the party and the government would be further strengthened as he is considered to be a close aide to the Prime Minister and has "direct" links with the powers-that-be in the government. In tweets, Modi said: "Amit Bhai started his (political) journey as an ordinary 'karyakarta' and has repeatedly proven himself through tireless hard work and determination."I would like to specially thank Rajnath (Singh) for his great leadership, under which the party scaled new heights of success," Modi added, referring to the outgoing BJP president.
