Chelsea FC confirms the sign-up for Diego-Costa

In the worst kept transfer news of the year, Chelsea have finally officially announced they have agreed a deal to bring the Spazillian striker to the Bridge from Atletico Madrid after his standout season for the Spanish Champions.

The deal is believed to be around £32m in accordance with the player’s buyout clause although, as per usual for the club, the fee is likely to be listed as ‘undisclosed’.

The player had past his medical a few weeks ago but there was little news because of the World Cup. Costa didn’t really turn up for Spain despite starting two of their three matches at the competition although he was still suffering from an injury that gave him the unfortunate title of fastest ever substitute in a Champions League final.

Now the player can relax for a few weeks before turning up at Cobham to meet his new team mates before heading off on the club’s pre-season tour.

All that is left is for the player to agree personal terms, although that was never going to be an issue. Costa will undoubtedly see a huge pay rise from his Atletico days but it’s highly unlikely  that he’ll be on Torresian wages.

The signing of Costa is the club’s second big-money acquisition of the summer following on from the reported £27-30m (depending on which paper you read) signing of his compatriot Cesc Fabregas.

This is unlikely to be Chelsea’s last foray into the transfer market this summer with reported interest in almost every high-profile player under the sun.
